I have learnt the hard way to check my spam folder on a regular basis. Today there was a message without a subject line, and beginning with my full name. I usually get lots of spammy messages from some company or another about how they can market and promote my book, and even though I suspected this was the case, I still opened the message in the spam folder.
Inside was a lovely message from a reader who connected with my memoir and wrote me a message to say so. "I recently read your memoir, Things Nobody Knows But Me, and was deeply moved by your candid portrayal of your mother's battle with bipolar disorder and its impact on your family. Your narrative offers profound insights into mental health and the complexities of mother-daughter relationships. Thank you for sharing your powerful story." So there are two important lessons I want to share with you: 1. When you send a book out into the world, it has no shelf life. You don't know when a new reader will find it, and when they fill find you. And this is the joy of writing, never knowing when you will get a lovely surprise. 2. Always, always check your spam folder. I have had some very important messages end up in there, and every once in a while, gems like this. PS You can buy a signed copy of my memoir from my shop, and get fancy embossing too for your troubles.
