Loved re-watching this M. Night Shyamalan classic sci fi thriller about an alien invasion. It has some great moments of humour and is so creepy and full of tension. And the end is sublime and just left me crying so much and in awe.

remembering srebrenica

The 11 July 1995 marks a dark day in Bosnian history. It is when the town of Srebrenica fell to the enemy after a 3 year siege and having been declared a safe zone. It is the day when women and children were separated from the boys and men. The women were ferried to the free zone while the men were transported on buses to killing grounds, executed and buried in mass graves. 8372 men and boys were killed in what was the largest massacre on European soil since WWII. For the last six years I've been working on my Creative Writing PhD writing a novel set during the town of Srebrenica and am completing an exegesis examining three novels written by non-Bosnian authors and the way they depict this historical time. Here are some books on my reading list that were useful in that research if you want to learn  more. Here is an article that I wrote that was published in Overland.

book review: The Studio Girls by Lisa Ireland

Ireland is one of my must-read authors who doesn’t disappoint. The Studio Girls is about four friends and their five-decade friendship and the bonds that forged and broke them set in a boarding house that was set up for aspiring studio girls. It is beautifully written, so full of heart, and made me tear up. Love it.

Jordan Peele is a genius with another stylish horror movie that is so original and entertaining. Great humour and twists and turns. Really enjoyed it. Low on the horror and more of a psychological thriller.

Thank you to Thuy On for writing this article about How did winning literary awards affect your life? for @_artshub and interviewing me and many other wonderful writers. It really demonstrates how important prizes are for supporting writers and their writing practice. And why are they taxed? Oy. It's like winning the lottery and shouldn't be taxed.

Bikeriders in the movies

8/7/2024

I was hoping this movie about the emergence of bike clubs would be good, and was completely blown away by its heart. Austin Butler smoulders his way through this role and really demonstrates the whole sexy biker image. Tom Hardy brings his usual empathy to the role of Johnny who started a bicycle club seeking community and belonging, and then watched it turn into something dark and brutish.

Anatomy of a Fall on Stan

A French movie that won the equivalent of a French oscar for an original screenplay was great. When her husband dies from a fall a wife is put on trial for his murder and their half blind son faces a dilemma about what to believe. Was it murder or was it suicide? This was a well-developed movie where the couple’s marriage is unpeeled like an onion as the defence and prosecutor argue their cases. Riveting!
